Mango Frooti..Fresh and Juicy….- A famous FMCG Indian beverage made at home!

In the 1990’s in India the concept of Tetrapacks came up with beverages and canned food exclusively and neatly packed in them. They became an instant hit with the consumer market as they were lightweight, easy to carry and kept food fresh as the tetra packs were sealed in vacuum.

One of the famous drinks was called Frooti which was a Mango beverage and came with an attached small plastic straw. There was a small sealed hole on the top of the tetra pack where the straw could be inserted and the person could happily sip the delicious drink as they wanted.

The first image of Mango Frooti we children grew up with….

In due course of time there were many negative rumours associated with this great tasting drink and now it is hardly seen in the market. When I was a child I drank a lot of this beverage on school picnics and with friends and could not forget the taste after growing up.There were many substitutes which came in the market but none matched the original Mango Frooti flavour.I am therefore bringing the nostalgia and famous characteristic taste with the incredibly easy recipe for all of you to savour.

This will be especially nostalgic for all the people born in India in the 80’s and 90’s.

The Advertisement jingle went like this : Mango Frooti…Fresh and Juicy..FRESHHHHHHHH!

My homemade Mango Frooti….

Chilling Time : 2 – 3 hours

1 large/2 medium raw Mangoes

1 or 2 large/2 or 3 medium ripe Mangoes

2 1/2 – 3 cups sugar

1 tsp Mango essence (optional)

2 cups plus 1 litre cold water

Peel the Raw and Ripe Mangoes and dice them.Put them in a pressure cooker with 1 cup water and pressure cook for 4 – 5 whistles.Wait for the pressure to release and then take out in a bowl and keep aside to cool to room temperature.

The pressure cooked/steamed Raw and Ripe Mangoes…

Put the sugar in a saucepan and pour the remaining 1 cup water on it.Mix well and heat till the sugar dissolves in the water. We do not need to make a syrup here so just dissolve the water.Keep aside to cool to room temperature.

After both the syrup and steamed Mango dices come to room temperature, put the Mango dices in a blender along with the water.Pour 1/2 cup of the sugar solution and blend to make a fine puree.Mix this puree into the remaining sugar solution and mix well with a whisk.

Add the 1 litre cold water whisking all the time and check for consistency. It should neither be very thick nor like water.Strain the drink through a soup strainer or sieve.

Whisk one time snd refrigerate till chilled.Pour into a glass jug for showing off the beautiful yellow colour!Serve with Ice Cubes.

Served in straw bottles and glass…
