South Indian Kalathu Podi/Dal Podi/Kulthi Dal Powder

Kulthi or Horse Gram is a kind of Dal which is lesser known in terms of cooking. In India its known as Gahat,Muthira,Kulath or Kulthi. In Tamil its known as Kollu. It is often fed to cattle hence its name. But in South Indian States,it is utilized for cooking in terms of a whole seed, sprouts or as a whole meal. Here I am presenting a very simple powder of this Kulthi Dal which is mixed with other dals and chili to create a wonderful substitute for a full meal. This powder is added over plain rice and a small measure of Sesame Oil is added to enhance taste and texture. This can be had with papads, any curry or just served plain to experience a wonderful kind of comfort food! You will not feel to have anything else after this!

The beautiful Medley of 3 wonderful Dals!
Grind to a semi – coarse powder.Add the roasted chilies and salt and powder again.Taste for salt here and if needed add more.Add the asafoetida. Grind one final time.Fill this delicious powder in airtight plastic or glass containers and use as required.

P.S.

1.Always keep the container tightly closed and airtight.Otherwise the lovely aroma and taste of the powder will dissipate and the powder will form lumps.
2.This is also a good accompaniment to Idlis and Dosas!
