Turai(Tooriya)Mung Ki Dal/Ridge Gourd and Lentils

India is a country where lentils and vegetables are given their priority in every meal.However it sometimes pays to combine both into a lovely medley which is again very delicious with the 2 main staple foods – Rice and Rotis(Indian Breads).This is a lovely mix of both.I have combined Mung Beans and Ridge Gourd into a lovely curry to be had with Rice and Papads. Wonderful with Rotis too!

Ingredients
1 cup Mung Dal – soaked for 1 hour
2 Turai(Turiya) peeled and chopped
2 tbsp oil/ghee
2 tsp jeera
1 tsp asafoetida
Salt to taste
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 Tomato chopped
1 green chili chopped
1 onion finely chopped
Method
Put the dal and Turai in a pressure cooker.Add 1 cup water and steam till dal is cooked.In another pan heat oil and add jeera.When it splutters add asafoetida and green chilies.Add onions and stir fry till translucent.Add tomatoes and fry for 2 minutes.Add the dal and turai and mix well.Add the spices and salt and cover and cook for 5-10 minutes.Serve with rice or rotis.
