Turmeric Latte

Turmeric Latte

I had posted about Preserving Turmeric in my last post. This is one great recipe in which you can use it!India has been famous for Turmeric Milk which is given to patients suffering from Flu,colds, cough and diarrhoea. There are taboos and traditions linked with this great ingredient and every Indian swears by its benefits!

However in the West Turmeric has been given a great importance these days as information and facts are spread quickly through media and everyone is eager to try out something new!Big coffee shops are selling a beverage called Turmeric Latte which is very similar to India’s own “Dadi Maa ka Haldi Wala Doodh” or Grandma’s Turmeric Milk!I tried the recipe and was completely floored by its simplicity and uniqueness! All you need to do is add powdered or whole spices to Turmeric Milk and filter it.

NOTE – You can use any spices but my personal choices are (whole or powdered) :

  • Cardamom or Elaichi
  • Cinnamon or Dalchini
  • Star Anise or Chakra Phool
  • Nutmeg or Jaiphal
  • Cloves or Laung
  • Bay Leaves or Tejpatta
  • Black Cardamom or Badi Elaichi

Preparation Time : 15 minutes

Makes : 2 cups

INGREDIENTS

2 cups milk (full fat/skim)

1 slice preserved Turmeric plus 1 tbsp syrup (see link for recipe)

OR

1/2 tbsp Turmeric Powder mixed with 1 tbsp sugar(brown organic if possible)

You can also use Honey,Stevia or any syrup as per your taste if using turmeric Powder

Spices as you want.I used :

1/2 tsp Cinnamon

1/2 tsp Cardamom

METHOD

Pour 1 1/2 cups of milk in a saucepan and add the spices.Bring to a boil over medium heat.

In a blender or chutney jar blend the remaining 1/2 cup milk and the preserved turmeric and syrup.Blend well till the turmeric amalgamates with the milk.Pour this mixture into the boiling milk and mix well.

The milk will turn a beautiful yellow colour.Boil for 3 – 4 minutes more and take off heat.Filter into another pan and pour into serving cups!

If using Turmeric Powder add the powder and sugar mix into the boiling spiced milk.Boil 3 – 4 minutes and take off heat.Filter and pour into serving cups!

Serve hot!
